Hey what's the big idea here?
What started as make-believe stories that my daughter and I told each other has grown into something much bigger.
Mizuki Kid Monster follows the adventures of a fuzzy little monster who leaves the woods to live with his new friends in a nearby city. Along the way he discovers school, candy, chores, video games, friendship, and countless new ways to accidentally make everyone's day much more complicated.
Over the years the project has expanded into books, comics, games, plushies, activity pages, and a steadily growing cast of characters. Every new story explores another corner of Mizuki's world while staying true to the simple idea that started it all: lovable characters getting into outrageous situations.
So, who is this Mizuki?
Mizuki is curious, impulsive, optimistic, and almost always convinced that his latest idea is a great one.
Sometimes he's right. Usually he isn't.
Whether he's avoiding homework, trying to sneak more candy, or wondering what would happen if he ate an entire tree, Mizuki somehow manages to create chaos without ever intending to.
Fortunately, his friends are always there to help him pick up the pieces.
Friends, Monsters & Other Relations
Max
Mizuki's first friend. She's also like a big sister who helps guide Mizuki through his many foibles. She's very busy.
Fennec Fox
Prefers to live in the woods outside of town. Thinks school is a waste of time. That opinion may change pretty soon though.
Demdaco
Smart. Quiet. Polite. Ruins the grade curve for everyone else. Very different than Mizuki but they are still great pals.
Cowlvin
Sometimes he's Mizuki's best bud. Sometimes he's Mizuki's bitter rival. Will these two ever learn to be cooperative deskmates?
Mr. Apple
Mizuki's elementary school teacher. Had his hands full with an unruly bunch even before Mizuki landed in his classroom.
Dr. Pitbull
The local family doctor. Cares deeply about his patients. His medical advice comes across as a little heavy handed sometimes though.
Books
Little Monster, Big World! The first Mizuki Kid Monster collection introduces readers to Mizuki's earliest adventures where he encounters trouble at school, friendships, and even a magic fish. Over 50 pages of full color comics, activities, and DIY crafts.
And guess what? There is a new book in the works! Thrill to bigger adventures and bigger trouble as Mizuki learns to be brave at the dentist and builds a rocket fueled by snacks. Say what? Check Mizuki's website (when it's launched) to order both books (when they are available again).
Mizuki's world doesn't stop when the books end. New comics appear throughout the year, the cast continues to grow, and new projects regularly wander into existence through creative detours including games, toys, activity pages, and real-world adventures starring the official Mizuki plushie.
Even Natural, my 2D platformer game about a wandering mushroom trying to find its way home exists in the Mizuki extended universe.
It's all part of an ongoing creative playground that continues to grow one strange little idea at a time.
